Ever since the 1st century specific gems have been linked with the zodiac signs and have been incorporated into gold and silver birthstone jewelry. Originally birthstone systems were based on the individual color of the gemstones. The origins of the tradition are believed to be related to the Breastplate of Aaron which incorporated gemstones associated with the twelve tribes of Israel. Each gem had the name of the tribe inscribed on it and they were attached to the breastplate in four rows of three. Although the names of the stones used are established, the exact translation is debatable so the specific gems that were used are unknown. This has led to various stones being associated with the different signs of the zodiac.
More recently birthstones became linked to the months of the year instead of the signs of the zodiac and there has been some variation in the month to which a gemstone is assigned. The most commonly used listing nowadays is one which was initiated by the Association of Jewelers in America in 1912, and has some substitutes for the higher-priced gemstones. One addition has been made since that time. December gained the birthstone Tanzanite in 2002 but it is not recognized by everyone.
Other systems which correlate distinct gems with the birth month include mystical birthstones and Ayurvedic birthstones. The mystical birthstones list is thought to originate over one thousand years in the past and originated Tibet, the Ayurvedic list is from ancient Indian philosophy and originated around 1500 BC. Nevertheless the majority use the contemporary listings put forward by the Association of Jewelers.
